BIO
Artista visual y experimental de prácticas sociales radicada en la Ciudad de México. En los últimos años ha desarrollado diferentes proyectos en localidades de México, Colombia y Cuba. Estos se caracterizan por un marcado componente contextual, participativo y procesual ―al ser pensados para comunidades y espacios específicos. Generalmente se desarrollan en largos lapsos de tiempo y están determinados por soluciones híbridas en la conjunción de saberes procedentes del cine de sitio, el documental expandido, el cine-arquitectura, la instalación, la antropología, la etnografía, la arqueología, el paisaje urbano, la escultura y la narrativa transmedia. Realizó su Maestría en Liberal Arts (Cine, Urbanismo, Antropología y Estudios Postcoloniales) en The New School for Social Research, NY, EE.UU. Estudió la Licenciatura en Ciencia Política en el Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México con un intercambio académico en el área de Sociología, Filosofía e Historia en la Universidad de La Habana, Cuba. Tiene estudios de Literatura en la Escuela Dinámica de Escritores, en la Sociedad General de Escritores Mexicanos y en Historia del Arte por la Universidad de La Sorbonne, París.
Ha sido merecedora de varios premios y reconocimientos. Representó a México en la XII Bienal de La Habana, Entre la Idea y la Experiencia, donde obtuvo el reconocimiento a la Mejor Obra de la Bienal con el proyecto "Trópico entrópico. Multiplicación del paisaje interior". Obtuvo la beca de la New School for Social Research y de la Secretaría de Educación Pública, así como la beca del Gobierno Indio de Relaciones Exteriores para realizar una investigación urbanística y antropológica en Mumbai, India. Ha sido becaria de Partners for Urban Knowledge Action and Research (PUKAR); Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (FONCA); y del Programa de Estímulo a la Creación y Desarrollo Artístico (PECDA).
Ha realizado residencias e investigación artística en China, India, EE.UU, México, Colombia y Cuba. Su trabajo ha sido exhibido en museos, instituciones y espacios independientes alrededor del mundo, como Museo de Arte Contemporáneo - MUAC, Museo Universitario del Chopo, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca - MACO, Museo de Arte Moderno - MAM, Galería Santa FE, Museum Arbeitswelt, Kunsthalle Mannheim, Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Boston Center for the Arts - Mills Gallery, entre otros. Ha dado cursos y talleres sobre Arte y Política; Prácticas participativas y afectivas; Cine y medios audiovisuales; Espacios informales. Entre sus libros se encuentran "Arquitectura sin arquitectos"; "Patentes sobre procedimientos, sistemas y tecnologías" y "Monumentos menores, mutaciones en el paisaje urbano".
Actualmente es miembro del Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte para el Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes. Fue seleccionada para representar a México en la 17ª Biennale di Venezia di Architettura, 2021.
Sandra Calvo is a visual and experimental artist, of social practices, based in Mexico City. In the last years, her work has explored issues concerning informal housing in Colombia, Cuba, and Mexico. Her projects are characterized by a marked contextual, participatory, and procedural component ―being designed for specific communities and spaces, generally developed over long periods of time. The interdisciplinary nature of her projects weaves together: site cinema, expanded documentary, architecture, installation, anthropology, ethnography, archeology, urban landscape, sculpture, and transmedia narratives. She completed a Master's Degree in Liberal Arts, Film, Urbanism, Anthropology, and Postcolonial Studies at The New School for Social Research, NY, USA. Sandra studied the Bachelor in Political Science at the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM) with an academic exchange in Sociology and Philosophy at the University of Havana, Cuba. She studied Film and Literature at the Escuela Dinámica de Escritores, part of the General Society of Mexican Writers, and Art History at Université de la Sorbonne, Paris.
She has been awarded several prizes and recognitions such as: representing Mexico in the XII Havana Biennial Between the Idea and the Experience, where she won the mention Best Work of the Biennial with the project "Tropic Entropic. Multiplication of the Inner Landscape". She obtained a scholarship from the New School for Social Research & Parsons and the Ministry of Public Education, as well as a grant from the Indian Government of Foreign Affairs to carry out urban and anthropological research in Mumbai, India. She has been a fellow of Partners for Urban Knowledge Action and Research (PUKAR); the National Fund for Culture and the Arts (FONCA), and of the Stimulus Program for Artistic Creation and Development (PECDA).
She has undertaken residencies and artistic research in China, India, the USA, Mexico, Colombia, and Cuba. Her work has been exhibited individually and collectively in biennials, national and international museums around the world, such as Museo de Arte Contemporáneo - MUAC, Museo Universitario del Chopo, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca - MACO, Museo de Arte Moderno - MAM, Galería Santa FE, Museum Arbeitswelt, Kunsthalle Mannheim, Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Boston Center for the Arts - Mills Gallery, among others. She has given lectures and workshops on Art and Politics; Participatory and Affective Artistic Practices; Cinema and Audiovisual Media; and the Informal Loci. Her books include: “Architecture Without Architects”; “Patents on Procedures, Systems, and Technologies”, and “Minor Monuments. Mutations in the Urban Landscape”.
She is currently a member of the National System of Art Creators for the National Fund for Culture and the Arts and has been selected to represent Mexico at the 17th Biennale di Venezia di Architettura, 2021.
